As a profession, IFAs are generally remunerated in one of two ways: commission or fees.
Fees would be similar to when one would pay a solicitor or accountant, on a time cost basis. Where the client pays for the advice whether he/she takes this forward or not. Any commissions normally generated would then be rebated into the client contract, either to enhance terms or reduce premiums.
Commissions are payable via the life office/investment house recommended by the IFA. These would be paid to the IFA, or his/her company, as an upfront payment. This would be recouped by the investment house/life office from future charges taken from the client’s investment. Clients would not have to write out a separate cheque for commission-based advice but are ultimately paying for the advice.
Discounts can be offered by some IFAs via their purchasing power and volumes of sales to certain life offices/investment houses–these can then be passed on to the clients thus ensuring more of the client’s initial monies are invested from day one.
Certain companies will offer higher levels of commission from time to time to boost sales. However, most IFAs could rebate any additional commissions to ensure a level playing field with no bias.
Alternative methods of adding value to clients can include newsletters, client magazines, client workshops/seminars. Ultimately, the incentive for the IFA in providing additional services such as these are continued business from clients and referrals.
